5 Women-Led Startups to Watch

Start-ups aren’t just a man’s realm. Here are five women-led startups focused on tech innovation:

Angaza Design. CEO Lesley Silverthorn and her team are merging “human-centered design” and alternative energy technologies so that people in developing countries don’t have to pay the literal and figurative price of dirty energy.

Pay-as-you-go solar is Angaza’s claim to fame. Available products include the SoLite3 Solar Home System and the Angaza Energy Hub.

GiveForward. Cancer treatments and funeral costs don’t have to be the financial burdens they used to with this crowdfunding platform dedicated to fundraising for medical expenses.

CEO Desiree Vargas Wrigley previously worked as the specialist in collegiate entrepreneurship at the Kauffman Foundation and as an independent consultant for Arabella Philanthropic Investment Advisors.

Rock Health. Halle Tecco founded the seed accelerator in 2011 and so far 13 start-ups have completed the program. It gives start-ups capital, mentorship, operational support and San Francisco office space.

Backers include the likes of Nike, Procter & Gamble and United Health.

Techturized. Ladies of color, if you need a smart place to seek hair advice, Madame You is the spot. This highly customized social network connects real-world hair experts with real-world curly girls.

Founded by four Georgia Tech ladies who code, Candace Mitchell, Jess Watson, Chanel Martin and Boy Buolamwini, the company recently won the 2013 Blacks in Technology Business (BiT) Pitch Competition at SXSW Interactive in Austin, TX.

Houzz. This startup makes it easy for people in the home remodeling and design business and homeowners and design enthusiasts to connect. Already, it boasts a database of over one million house and landscape photos.

Co-founders Adi Tatarko and Alon Cohen launched the website in 2009 and released an iPad app for the site in December 2012. Five million downloads later, they are preparing to launch on Android.
