Female Breadwinners: Bad for Society?

Rather than celebrate news that women are now the sole or primary bread winners in four out of 10 households, an all male FOX News panel announced it as bad news.

Commentators complained that women gaining economic equality is a danger to society.

Why?

They claim it undermines institutions of marriage and family.

One study found when the wife earns more, spouses are seven percentage points less likely to describe their marriage as “very happy”. They’re six percentage points more likely to have discussed separating in the last year.

“Something [is] going terribly wrong with society … It’s hurting our children,” said FOX News commentator Juan Williams.

But other hosts, such as Greta van Sustreten and Megyn Kelly, fired back in disbelief.

Sustreten took to Twitter, stating, “Have these men lost their minds? And these are my colleagues! Oh brother…”

According to Catalyst, women ages 20-34 are more closely approaching pay equity, earning over 90 percent of men’s earnings in 2012.

Brace yourselves, boys.

You can expect the trend to continue as young women attend colleges in greater numbers and earn better grades.

Social dynamics are evolving.
