Spring Clean Your Closet and Make Room for Summer

“I like my money right where I can see it. Hanging in my closet.” -Sarah Jessica Parker

If you find yourself saying,” I have nothing to wear, “ chances are it’s because you can’t find anything in your closet.

Spring is the quintessential season for cleaning and your closet is the first place to start.

Here are a few simple tips that will ensure a great relationship with your clothes and as a result, you’ll love spending time in your closet.   Remember…a tidy closet promotes a tidy mind!

So…what are you waiting for? Let’s get going!

EDITING BASICS:

  • Start with 2 questions: “Would I buy this today?” “Does it make me look and feel good?”  If you answer these 2 questions honestly as you look through your closet you will be very happy with your finished product! Sort all items from your closet into 5 piles:
  • Keep (it makes me feel good.)
  • Donate (someone else would enjoy it more.)
  • Resell (it’s valuable and I can make some $$.)
  • Keepsake or Repurpose (once was a great dress…now a great tunic or cover-up.)
  • Toss (or donate to the rag collection.) Remember to include purses, shoes, underwear (keep it fresh) and workout clothes when you do your editing

After you have sorted into your piles, you’re ready to organize the clothes you love.

BASIC CLOSET STRATEGIES:

  • Organize by category (if you have 2 closets organize categories by season.) Keep in mind, “Clothes, like people, can relax more freely when in the company of others who are similar in type, and therefore organizing them by category helps them feel more comfortable and secure” (Marie Kondo says, “The life-changing magic of tidying up.”)

Categories should include:

  • Dresses
  • Jackets
  • Tops
  • Pants
  • Skirts
  • Coats
Organize categories into colors with black and white to the left of the group. Organize categories by weight from heaviest to lightest. Knits/scarves need to be folded and organized by color lightest to darkest. Additional basics, include:
  • No plastic in closet. Take off those dry cleaner bags
  • Use all same type of slim hangers
  • Invest in good lighting and a great mirror
  • Accessorize your closet like you would a room…add a favorite piece of art and a beautiful rug
  • Take off the tags (“Clothes that still have their price tag on have not been made our own and therefore they don’t quite ‘belong.’” -Marie Kondo)

CLOSET MUST-HAVES:

  • Black and Nude Pumps
  • Basic Camis and Layering Tanks
  • Black Blazer
  • Black Pants: casual and dressy
  • White Pants: casual and dressy
  • Great fitting Jeans (indigo and white)
  • White Blouses
  • Day Dresses
  • Evening Dresses (Little Black Dress + Little White Dress)
  • Wraps and Cardigans

NOW… YOU’VE GOT ROOM SO IT’S TIME TO WELCOME NEW CLOTHES INTO YOUR CLOSET 2016 SUMMER STYLE TRENDS:

  • 70s Vibe: This trend takes us back to the days of Farrah Fawcett and Charlie’s Angels…peasant tops and fringe skirts flared pants (yay! these are slenderizing on all body types) denim denim everywhere; wear your denim pants with your denim top or jacket!
  • Shine On: Add some sparkle for daytime or evening… a little sparkle goes a long way
  • Rank and File: Fatigue is everywhere and wear a little (add a touch in a scarf) or a lot (head to toe)
  • Walk the Line: Stripes are fresh and fun and they come in all shapes and sizes. Wear them together…mix and match.  Fresh for summer … a crisp navy striped tunic
  • Monochrome Moment: Nothing says classic and classy better than black and white.

“Your closet needs to be a place of joy and celebration of who you are now-not who you were.” -Stacy London
