Five Advancement Tips
Feel like you’re not advancing in your job? You’re not the only one.
Nearly 78 percent of women want a promotion but feel stuck.
Career expert, Director of Career Management & Leadership Development, MBA@UNC Shawnice Meador shares her top tips to get your next step up the ladder as the New Year begins.
Building a virtual network or expanding your professional circle is always beneficial to your career, but how often do you network with people within your company? Expanding your network within the company – especially outside of your department – will help you.
“Vocalize your plans to stay within the company long-term,” Meador says. It might seem redundant, but with today’s high rate of staff turnover, managers are likely to promote women they think are in for the long haul.
Another must-do?
“Invest in continuous learning to stay on top of your game,” she says. “If you are pursuing an MBA, try to put into action some of the lessons you are learning in class. This can grab the attention of decision makers and show them what you can do.”
Get a clear understanding of the company’s business strategy and how your role contributes. “If you’re not sure – ask,” adds Meador.
Top women like HP VP, Gabi Zedlmayer, continue to emphasize how impacting important business functions is the way to get ahead.
And, just because you were not assigned to an assignment doesn’t mean you can’t contribute to the effort. Lending a helping hand to projects beyond your department shows your drive for success and willingness to help your company succeed. Employers appreciate hearing your suggestions about a project, but actually acting on them is what impresses.
