Laurie Tucker’s career began more than 30 years ago when she joined FedEx as a financial analyst. Today, as senior vice president of FedEx Services Corporate Marketing, she manages a team of 300 and is one of the company’s highest-ranking women. But her professional growth required overcoming personal challenges – most notably, her “working mom guilt.”
Tucker credits an optimistic spirit and people-centered focus with helping her break barriers at work. But advancement has come with its fair share of challenges, like juggling multiple priorities at home and at the office.
Tucker recallsm attending NASCAR races to support FedEx sponsored drivers earlier in her career that took her away from her family on the weekends. It “left me feeling guilty, especially with my son who wished he could be there with me.” What allowed her to create the reality she wanted for her family and her career? Visualization.
When Tucker feels stressed, she envisions a successful future state. “I call it ‘playing the movie.’ Play the movie in your head of how you’d like the outcome to look after you’ve taken the risk in question, and envision how others will benefit and grow as you spread your positive influence.”
One of her greatest joys has been watching her daughter and son grow up with the company. When FedEx shot a commercial for their sponsored NASCAR driver, she was able to include her son’s name in the TV spot. “You should have seen his little face when the commercial began,” Tucker says. It was “just a little way to make him know he was included in Mom’s job.”
