Network Like A Man

More companies are hiring this year than last. When you’re between jobs or looking for a career change, attending networking events may be key to finding your next great gig.

But all that hand shaking, business card distributing and following up without a solid lead or prospect can be exhausting – and discouraging.

Worry not! The key to getting the most out of your next meet and greet may be as simple as sliding into your pumps and carrying yourself ‘like a man.’ How so?

“Don’t be afraid to be assertive,” certified career coach Hallie Crawford tells PINK. “Walk right up to people and get down to the business of why you’re there and what you’re looking for.”

While women often chat about personal stuff, men tend to get right down to it. Crawford adds men share less personal information and aren’t afraid to join in on existing conversations.

She advises women get comfortable ending conversations once they’ve gotten what they want out of them. It’s not about being rude, she explains, but about time management, which is key when working the room. And don’t forget to promote yourself. According to Crawford, too many women have a bad habit of downplaying their skills.

Experts say it’s good to leverage those innate female skills your male counterparts may not be as strong in: like attention to detail, multi-tasking and etiquette expertise.
