What Price Would You Put on Your Head?

Whether a picture is worth a 1,000 words or 10,000 words – one thing we can’t underestimate is the importance of an effective image.

Your professional headshot is one of the most powerful business tools you have at your disposal. Likened to “the new handshake,” a great headshot is equally as important as a firm grip.

Branding and marketing strategist, Meredith Liepelt, has helped several clients plan and prepare their headshots. She offers these four tips to ensure your image conveys your worth:

Be yourself.

“If you don’t normally wear a business suit, don’t wear one in your headshot. You won’t feel like yourself and that will show in your expression.”

Look the part, but don’t over-style to the point where the photo doesn’t represent you.

Don’t be afraid to be quirky.

Do you wear fashion statement glasses or a signature piece of jewelry? Wear them in your headshot.

“If it’s something you’re known for in your everyday life, don’t hide it in your headshot. That is part of what makes you stand out,” says Liepelt.

Wear a color that pops.

That color that looks amazing with your complexion – wear it. Solid colors, rather than bold prints, work best.

Consider the environment you’re in.

Do you want a conventional white background or a situational headshot – perhaps at your desk or outside in the park?

“The background of your headshot tells a story,” Liepelt says.

What are your goals? What story do you want your image to tell?

Freshen up your visuals each year says Liepelt, and you’re good to go.
